Cloud
Description
Time to get into the cloud?
You will, quite possibly, have heard the expression 'cloud technology' being passed around, and it tends to remain a fairly vague thing - not helpful, if you are trying to make decisions about your IT strategy for you company.
The term 'cloud' does have a variety of meanings. However, basically, it is the use of the internet to access systems and data storage, rather than owning all of the hardware yourself. Everything is delivered via a browser on the PC on your desk. It can provide considerable savings on system deployment, and introduce high levels of flexibility into your business too.
A commonly expressed reservation about cloud deployed software and data storage is security, however considerable advances have been made in this area providing the ability to manage access down to individual PC level if required.
There are advantages and disadvantages to this approach, and we are willing to discuss those fully with you, and to work with you to provide the right solution for your business.
FAQ
What is cloud technology?
Really, the term is slightly misleading. It would be better to think of the cloud as an approach to IT than a technology. It is about harnessing and pooling the resources of high powered servers, virtualisation, and the considerable possibilities of remote access to reduce the need for local hardware dependant solutions. There are, therefore many categories of cloud solutions.
What are these categories?
Broadly, there are 'software as a service', 'infrastructure as a service' 'and platforms as a service'
How do charging models work?
Most cloud style solutions have some variation on a pay as you need basis, with monthly costs replacing upfront capital costs, and payment being based on resources needed and used.
Can you do anything in the cloud?
Well, technically, yes, pretty much anything. But that is not the same as saying it is the best idea for everything. As ever with IT decisions, it is necessary to match your needs and budget with the solution provided.
When the internet is down, I will lose everything?
No. Not if proper back up arrangements are in place, and it is important to be confident in your service level agreement and business continuity arrangements. But, just as in a normal LAN/WAN, a broken telephone line means no system. So, to emphasise again, check the SLA.
