The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) says that UK small business confidence in the last quarter bounced back to the level reported before the EU referendum campaign began.

According to the FSB’s Small Business Index, confidence has now moved into positive territory, which means that more small businesses feel confident than those that feel the opposite. The confidence measure now stands at +8.5, up from -2.9 in the previous quarter, almost the same level as it stood at the start of 2016.

Mike Cherry, National Chairman at the Federation of Small Businesses, said: “The current economic outlook seems brighter, and UK small businesses are ambitious and want to make the most of it.”

Private sector growth picked up pace in the three months to December, according to the CBI’s final Growth Indicator of 2016.

The survey of 788 respondents across the manufacturing, distribution and service sectors showed that growth climbed to a balance of +17%, its highest in a year.

Most sectors reported an upturn in activity with the manufacturing sector witnessing a strong rise.

The CBI says that companies across most sectors expect to see similarly healthy growth over the next three months although after that things seem more uncertain due largely to Brexit concerns.

The British Chambers of Commerce has upgraded its UK GDP growth forecast from 1.0% to 1.1% for 2017 and predicts that manufacturing growth will remain steady at 0.8% over 2017 and 2018.

Dr Adam Marshall, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “In the absence of a clear road ahead, many companies have been adopting a ‘business as usual’ approach in the months since the referendum, which has kept conditions buoyant and prevented a sharp slowdown in growth.”
