If the recent global ransomware attack taught us anything, it is that everyone needs to be vigilant when it comes to cyber-security.

Among those issuing warnings was the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) who urged business people not to make the mistake of assuming only big business is at risk.

The federation is warning small businesses in the UK to take urgent steps to protect themselves.

Dave Stallon, commercial director at FSB, said: “We are raising the alarm with the UK’s 5.5 million-strong small business community. It is vital that small businesses and the self-employed prioritise this and that they do it today.”

We agree. In addition to offering a range of IT solutions that can help businesses take advantage of the digital revolution, Bowe Digital can also advise on your cyber security.

A new survey has shown that UK manufacturers experienced strong growth in orders both at home and from abroad over the first quarter of 2017.

Researchers for the latest quarterly CBI Industrial Trends Survey contacted 397 manufacturers and found that domestic orders improved at the fastest pace since July 2014 in the three months to April.

Meanwhile export orders recorded the strongest growth in six years, supported by strong rises in competitiveness, particularly in non-EU markets which improved at a record pace.

Output growth firmed to a three-year high and is expected to accelerate over the next quarter.

Companies are also upbeat in their year-ahead expectations for exports, with optimism posting the biggest gain in over four decades.

Rain Newton-Smith, CBI Chief Economist, said: “UK manufacturers are enjoying strong growth in demand from customers in the UK and overseas, and continue to ramp up production. Exports have surged and firms are at their most optimistic about selling overseas in over four decades.”

We believe that digital technology is playing its part to support this continuing growth, and Bowe Digital offers a range of IT solutions that can help businesses take advantage.

Cyber crime has been included for the first time in the newly-published Crime Survey for England and Wales and showed 3.6 million fraud and 2.0 million computer misuse offences for the year ending September 2016.

Frauds referred to the police showed an annual rise of 3% and other industry data on financial fraud showed there were 1.9 million cases of frauds on UK-issued cards, an increase of 39% from the previous year.

We welcome the inclusion of figures for online crime; only when you know the scale of a problem can you truly begin to tackle it and a few simple precautions can thwart the criminals.
